If Sony's "woe is me" lobbying campaign is actually successful – all over one game! – I could see Microsoft ultimately making things much worse for Sony by going at them on their home turf: buying Square Enix, Capcom, Atlus, etc. 1/x

Are any of those publishers for sale? Well, having $69b to spend can change a lot of minds, and certainly Microsoft could *overpay* for all three of those I listed and still not dent the $69b they offered for Activision-Blizzard. It's a hell of a lot of money to play with. 2/x

Is Phil petty enough to start grabbing Sony's biggest 3P Japanese publishers out from under them? Not personally, based on the guy I've known for years. But he's also a shrewd businessman atop a multibillion-dollar business who is trying to deliver value to his company. 3/x

Ultimately, this report is nothing more than "the US government might sue to try & stop the acquisition." It doesn't guarantee anything, including the FTC's victory in that scenario. All of this remains a fascinating soap opera playing out in real time right in front of us. /end

P.S. I should add that I'm not personally rooting for a hypothetical scenario like the one I just laid out to come to fruition. Consolidation isn't necessarily a good thing (or necessarily bad). You could do a whole podcast on this topic (hmm...). 240 characters ain't enough! 😁
