(1/6) I wish I could respond directly, but right I'm mainly limited to Twitter as I wait for Google to validate my email account for my new computer. So here comes me talking about Death Stranding sale stuff, let me say upfront the source of this is KatharsisT & I'm speaking from
(2/6) memory as I can't access our conversation on this topic right now. Kojima's comments in today's interview fit perfectly with what we talked about though. Death Stranding was profitable, it didn't tank, but it was a flop. From how I understand it the initial sales were very
(3/6) good, it did great out of the door and did become profitable, but the sales tail fell off a cliff after the first couple months, and there remains many printed but unsold copies of the game as of a few months ago in the millions, which is also why more recently the price of
(4/6) game has dropped everywhere, to $30-40 already. Now speaking from something else, an actual slightly comparable point I know 100% would be Resident Evil 6. RE6 did sell well, but it was considered a flop and dropped in price quickly due to too many printed copies. Even tho
(5/6) it was profitable and a success in many ways (it's one of the top selling Capcom games ever), it was still considered a flop by many within the company due to various factors of budget, return, value, etc. DS is in a kinda' similar position, but it is a new IP so it did
(6/7) well enough, but at the same time it had a bloated budget and the return was not as high. There's a lot more I'd need to re-read to convey accurately, but there was major issues internally about the budget DS was getting so it got cut part-way through development. I know
(7/7) it's weird, but there's a middle ground for something to be successful for a studio financially but a flop in a bigger sense. The thing that interests me more is some stuff Kojima says in the interviews aligns exactly with stuff I heard though.
